The Gap Series by Stephen Donaldson : A truly spectacular and imaginative epic, though not for the squeamish! Don't be put off by the rather light weight first volume, the rest are totally mesmerising. Despite the somewhat disappointing ending this was undoubtably my BOOK OF THE YEAR 1996.

The Many-Coloured Land by Julian May : The first book of the Saga of the Exiles. An enjoyable and engrossing sci-fi/fantasy tale, of humans returning back through time to the Pliocene age and finding themselves in a society run by psychic aliens. RECOMMENDED.
